Creating tomorrow's leaders through community
service today.
Community Involvement Program
Original Concept and Motivation
-The student-athletes who participate the most in Newton's numerous
sports-related teams and activities (both formally and informally),
typically gain the most from the exceptional programs and services
available within our community.
-Most of these student-athletes are very interested in getting involved in
community service activities as a way to give back to the community and to
help support worthwhile causes.
-For most student-athletes it is very difficult to commit to on-going
community service projects because their active involvement in sports and
schoolwork does not allow them enough consistent free time or enough
advanced notice of practices and games.
Goals and Objectives
-Create an organization for these student-athletes that provides them with
substantial opportunities for community service involvement, while not
conflicting with their sports and/or academic commitments.
-Create an organization that exposes the student-athletes to a wide variety
of worthwhile causes.
-Create an organization that utilizes the unique qualities and capabilities
of Newton's
student-athletes---strong, healthy, disciplined, dedicated, and energetic
young men and women accustomed to working hard for sustained periods of
time in a team environment.
-Create an organization that can help support the Newton area's numerous other community
service groups/programs. Instead of being viewed as a potential drain of
other community service organizations resources, ASC can be the first to potentially
provide helpful support to all of them.
-Create an organization that is reasonably simple to operate. Require the
requesting organizations to submit to us a formal request for support that
outlines the required activities and provides a plan to help supervise our
volunteers.
-Create an organization and operating plan that is easily sustainable and
repeatable (something that can easily be duplicated by other communities).
-Involve student athletes from all Newton high schools (public, private,
and parochial) as well as those from Newton that attend outside schools.
Eventually expand to include the local Newton-based colleges.
-Although the core focus of this organization is on student-athletes (based
on their unusual time constraints), anyone with similar time constraint
challenges is encouraged to become an active member of ASC.
Additional Notes/Comments
Typical volunteer events will involve 4-6 hour blocks of time.
Our goal for each member is to have them participate in a minimum of four
volunteer days per school year (which would equate to around 20 hours of
volunteer work annually).
Our targeted activities typically will involve providing a physical labor
force to help support major community initiatives such as spring cleaning
at a nursing home, helping build a local playground, working with the
Special Olympics, manning water stations at fundraising walks, etc.
We will provide certificates of community service involvement for all of
the ASC members for each individual
event they participate in.
We hope to stage one big fun event at the end of each school year for all volunteers
at which we will provide certificates of achievement based on the members
overall level of involvement.
We hope to minimize meetings/organizational time for the members and
maximize actual volunteer time.
We hope to recruit local sponsors to help pay for the ASC t-shirts, etc., we provide for
the members. Our goal would be to have enough funds to provide newly
designed shirts each year for the members.
We will name team captains on an annual basis as group
leaders/coordinators. This will be based on their level of involvement with
ASC and their leadership skills.
We will establish a Board of Directors that includes adults and students as
well as an Advisory Board made up of community leaders.
